Nutrition and Wound Care

In this session, participants will explore the stages and processes involved in wound healing. Nutrition is a critical factor that influences healing outcomes, and malnutrition can significantly disrupt the healing cascade. Early and routine nutritional screening is therefore essential for effective wound prevention and treatment.

We will examine the roles of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), each of which contributes uniquely to the healing process. This lecture will highlight key nutrients and their specific functions, drawing on the latest empirical research.

Finally, participants will learn how to translate theory into practice by reviewing current international clinical practice guidelines and applying them through case studies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the various stages of wound healing.
  2. Determine the impact of each macro and micronutrient in each stage of wound healing.
  3. Analyze the effect of malnutrition on the overall process of wound healing and the need for routine malnutrition screening.
  4. Discuss the 2019 International clinical practice guidelines and their application in practice.
